Determination of the Biocidal Activity of Five Species of the Genus Acalypha (A. Guatemalensis, A. Arvensis, A. Polystaquia, A. Hispida and A. Pseudoalopecuroides)

The purpose of the research was to contribute to the biological and phytochemical study of medicinal plants popularly used in Guatemala, so it was interesting to select five species of the Acalypha genus (Acalypha guatemalensis, Acalypha arvensis, Acalypha polysiaqiaa, Acalypha hispida and Acalypha pseiidoalopecuroides) popularly known as Cancer herb.
The biocidal activity was evaluated and it was shown that there is significant activity for A. polystaquia, A. arvensis and A. guatemalensis against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 274853 and Cryptococcus neoformans C 13 at a concentration of 1 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL for A. .arvensis, A. guatemalensis and A. pseudoalopeculoides.
None of the species showed activity against the larvae of Ahites aegypri and Anophles albimanus. The secondary metabolites present in the extracts were identified, which were: flavonoids, anthocyanins, anthraquinones, camarinas. saponins, bitter principles and cardenolides.
