.Abstract
The Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala in its Article 82, establishes that the University of San Carlos, in its capacity as the only state University, "will promote research in all spheres of human knowledge by all means available to it and will cooperate with the study and solution of national problems.
To fulfill this mandate and aware that in a higher education institution, it is research, as the axis of the educational process, that must provide the necessary scientific and technological competence to contribute to the well-being of Guatemalan society and compete in this era of globalization, the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy structure in June 2002 its Research System.
Based on a systemic approach, our Research System, with three and a half years of life, is made up of three fundamental sub-systems:
• The Management sub-system (the Research System Advisory Council), responsible for outlining the general research policy and promoting its development,
• The Coordination sub-system (The Chemical and Biological Research Institute - IIQB-), responsible for coordinating, guiding, promoting and disseminating research activities, and• The Operating sub-system, made up of the Research Units, groups of professors and students who carry out the research projects.
