Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the in vitro antibacterial action of crude ethanolic extracts of 15 medicinal plants popularly used for the treatment of different respiratory ailments. The methodology employed was based on the modified Bauer-Kirby test, applied to Gram-positive bacterial strains, specifically Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, using extracts of the plants under study at two known concentrations of 5 and 10 mg. Additionally, the lowest concentration of extract that inhibited the bacteria in the plants that showed positive results was determined by making dilutions of these initial concentrations, always using the disc impregnation technique. The extracts that inhibited S. pyogenes were the following in decreasing order based on the average inhibition diameter obtained at concentrations of 5 to 10 mg: Eucalytus globulus, Matricaria recutita, Borrago officinalis, Ficus carica, Mentha arvensis, Salvia officinalis and Lippia alba; and those inhibited S. aureus were: Thymus vulgris, E. globulus, Buddleja americana, L. alba, S. officinalis, Tilia platyphyllos, Cirsium mexicanum, Verbena litoralis, M. arvensis and Lippia dulcis. The extract that showed the greatest inhibitory activity against both bacteria was E. globulus, while L. alba, S. officinalis and M. arvensis inhibited them to a lesser extent. S. pyogenes was more susceptible to the E. globulus extract at a concentration of 1.25 mg. And S. aureus to T. vulgaris at a concentration of 0.31 mg.
