This Academic Unit, which I am honored to lead, is pleased to present to the scientific and professional community, the public sector and international organizations this Special Edition of the Scientific Journal which aims to disseminate the results of the research carried out at the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy in recent years on the vector of Chagas disease, the "beaked bug", T'iatoma dimidiata. It also constitutes a stimulus and recognition for the professor-researcher M.Sc. María Carlota Monroy Escobar and the team of researchers from the Applied Entomology and Parasitology Laboratory of the School of Biology of this Academic Unit.
The investigative work carried out by the aforementioned team stands out for several reasons, among them; This is a study of the main vector of a disease that affects a large sector of the country's low-income population. The remarkable scientific quality of the work carried out has earned the aforementioned team of researchers two important awards: recently, the Prize for Scientific Research, Year 2001, in the Scientific-Technological and Medical-Assistance Areas, awarded by the General Directorate of Research of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala for the four studies presented in this Journal, and the Mention as Scientist of the Year 2001 to Biologist Monroy Escobar by the Science and Technology Section of a well-known written media in the country.
In the studies carried out, morphometry and molecular biology techniques are applied to the genetic study of the populations of Tiatoma dimidiata, the ecology and control of said species. The value of the research is increased and reaches its maximum goal by establishing technical guidelines for the control and elimination of the vector, which are taken into account by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of the Republic of Guatemala, institutions that have called on Biologist Monroy Escobar to participate in the National Control Program for Victors of Chagas Disease. Likewise, the Pan American Health Organization - PAHO - has requested the contribution of Biologist Monroy Escobar for the definition of control strategies at a regional level. This brings a concrete and direct benefit to the most needy human groups.
