Distribution of Aedes albopictus (Diptera - Culicidad) in Guatemala, follow-up to a colonization in 1995

                Abstract

                In Guatemala, established populations of Aedes albopictus (Sukuse) were discovered for the first time in 1995 in the Caribbean region, Puerto Barrios and Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla, department of Izabal.   In 1997, the geographical distribution and seasonal prevalence of this species in Guatemala were investigated. Larvae and pupae were collected from artificial breeding sites inside and outside the houses by random sampling, in the dry season (March) and in the rainy season (August). The distribution of this species was found limited to the same area as in 1995. This situation is very different from that of the United States, where this species has consistently expanded its distribution. In Guatemala, in urban areas Ae. albopictus reproduces in small containers with water and has a higher population density than Ae. aegypti in the rainy season. No specimens were captured in border towns with Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador, nor in the ports of the Pacific Ocean, nor on the Atlantic Highway towards the capital city. This phenomenon may be due to competition with Ae. aegypti (L..) in Guatemala.
