Abstract

Guatemala has been suffering a generalized crisis in various areas, mainly in the social and environmental spheres. Wherever we go, deterioration is present: loss of tree cover, extinction of species and erosion, with clear repercussions on biological diversity and potential future productivity.   The accelerated advance of urban expansion, which implies an increase in pollution: health problems and changes in the life expectancy of the population; a long history of authoritarian governments in a divided society; a mistaken economic policy, opposed to indefinite growth without regard to income distribution; technological backwardness and a disastrous relationship of external debt, make up some of the elements that have led Guatemala to the crisis.   Today the country has to face a serious dilemma: continue a path that leads irremediably to the increase of poverty, backwardness and environmental degradation or opt for a development strategy that seeks sustainability through a process that generates democratic, equitable spaces and economic growth that takes advantage of natural resources in a renewable way.
