Abstract

Scientific knowledge and its application in technology have contributed - more than any other factor - to the economic growth of developed countries, the fight against disease, the creation of new materials, etc. Technological changes must incorporate the country into the new dimension of the world market in competitive terms.   Likewise, Guatemalan society urgently needs new ideas, proposals and alternatives that allow it to travel along a sustainable path of growth and development, not only in the face of the poor conditions of existence of important sectors of its population, but also in the face of the and hopes of the rest of society to ethnically improve their quality of life expectations.   Therefore, a new social contract is required between science and society, which faces the most urgent contemporary problems such as poverty, environmental deterioration, education, public health and food security, within a framework of human rights. and universal ethical values.   In our country, along with globalization, we are immersed in the fight to enforce the Peace Agreements, this conjunction constitutes the basis of the changes to be made in the economic, political, socio-cultural and institutional, where scientific research must play a leading role in our entry into the 21st century.   It is in this line that the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy visualizes the role that scientific research must play at the present time and direct our research efforts through the Institute of Chemical and Biological Research facing the new millennium.
