Abstract

The work consisted of analyzing, by means of the Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPDs) technique, the kinship relationships in a population of Triatoma dimidiata (Reduvidae, Triatominae) collected in a single human dwelling, throughout a year. The selected dwelling was located in the Aldea El Cuje, Municipality of Pueblo Nuevo Viñas, Department of Santa Rosa. This area is considered in Guatemala as highly endemic for Chagas disease.

130 T dimidiata individuals were collected from which DNA was extracted from the legs and amplified using short primers or oligonucleotides L1, L4, and H3 from Operan. The results of the amplifications allowed the analysis of 14 dominant loci with allelic frequencies between 0.1 and 0.6. The number of "full sibling" families (siblings from the same male and female parent) was estimated at 17. The number of individuals that formed each family and the number of families reflected a moderate inbreeding and evidenced an intradomiciliary genetic flow. Six families were found that were made up of three or more full siblings and 11 families with two or fewer siblings of the same father and mother. These 11 families may be pointing to gene flows from abroad and/or
polyandry.

These results are extremely useful for control purposes, since a population with high inbreeding will be easily controllable by traditional methods. Not so a population that shows high diversification. In the case of T dimidiata from Pueblo Nuevo Viñas, inbreeding is moderate, which indicates a species in the process of diversification.

These results reveal that control strategies for T dimidiata must take into account the population movements of the species and the degree of inbreeding of the species.
each population.
