Abstract

Air quality studies for Guatemala City began in the 1970s through the PANAFRE Network, an initiative of PAHO. The network's studies ended in the early 1980s. In 1994, the Air Monitoring Laboratory was established as an initiative of the Swisscontact Foundation and the School of Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, beginning with the measurement of some of the most significant air pollutants. In 1999, the air monitoring project was implemented with the support of the General Directorate of Research of USAC (DIGI) and the Institute of Chemical and Biological Research of the Faculty of Pharmacy. In 2001, a pilot air quality plan was launched for the Republic of Guatemala with the advice and support of the USAID and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This aid will consist of the development and implementation of an action plan for air quality in Guatemala, as well as the donation of certain equipment for air monitoring.
