Air quality studies for Guatemala City emerged in the 1970s through the PANAFRE Network at the initiative of PAHO. network studies
ended in the early 1980s. In 1994, the Air Monitoring Laboratory emerged as an initiative of the Swisscontact Foundation and the School of Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, beginning with the measurement of some of the more significant air pollutants. In 1999, the air monitoring project was carried out with the support of the General Directorate of Research of the USAC -DIGI- and the Institute of Chemical and Biological Research of the Faculty of Pharmacy. For the year 2001, an air quality pilot was started for the Republic of Guatemala with the advice and support of the U SAID and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). implementation of an action plan for air quality in Guatemala as well as the donation of certain equipment for air monitoring.
