The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of rice water with carrots compared to rice water on the duration of diarrhea, number of bowel movements and stool consistency in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children. It was conducted in a population consisting of 22 children between 6 and 60 months of age admitted to the Pedro de Bethancourt National Hospital in Antigua Guatemala, 11 children were randomly assigned to a control group and 11 to the experimental group. The experimental group was given rice water with carrots and the control group only rice water. The children were under a minimum observation period of 48 and a maximum of 72 hours, the average volume of rice water and rice water with carrots administered was 32 ounces to each child, breastfed children continued to be fed on demand, weaned children or those with mixed feeding, who took infant formula continued to be provided in the usual way and those who received solid foods were given the hospital diet. The average age of the children participating in the study was one year and nine months in the experimental group and one year and eight months in the control group. Forty-one percent of the children in the experimental group were male and 9.0% were female, while in the control group, 27% were male and 23% were female.
