Abstract

2.1 1-cyclized cembranoids are a family of highly functionalized diterpenoids isolated mainly from Caribbean Sea octocorals. .

The proposed biosynthetic pathway arose from the 2,11 -cyclization of the cembrane ring skeleton and further oxidative cyclizations and methyl migrations to construct the carbon skeleton of asbestinin. briarellin, eunicellm and sarcodictyin type compounds.

Sixty nine cembranoids. thirty nine asbestinins, twenty two briarelhns, seven sarcodictyms and one eunicellm have been isolated to December 2009 from three Caribbean gorgonian, forty four from Briareum asbestmum, eighteen from Briareum polyanthes and seven from Erithropodium caribbaeorum.

The varied biological and pharmacological properties showed by this compounds, range from cytotoxical and antitumoral to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

The number and unique structure of this class of secondary metabolites, besides the varied and interesting biological activity should be subject to further research.

An overview of their biogenetic pathway, structure and biological activity are described in this paper.
