Validation of information collected by primary school teachers for use in nutritional monitoring systems

      Abstract

      This study validates height/age data from first-grade children and socioeconomic information from their families, collected by primary school teachers in San Mateo Milpas Altas, Santiago Sacatepéquez, Santa María Cauque, San José Pacul, Pachalí, and El Rejón, all communities in the department of Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. The main objective of validating this type of data was to contribute to the development of methodologies and tools for preparing nutritional and socioeconomic diagnoses that can be used to guide actions contemplated in Food and Nutrition Planning (FNP) processes. The information analyzed suggests that teachers can correctly estimate height/age and summarize data by height/age category and socioeconomic information category for subsequent submission to regional levels. However, the data collected on socioeconomic aspects was misinterpreted due to the instructions and tools used in the study.
