The carbapenem are considered restricted antibiotics, use either alone or in combination with vancomycin. There are among the most effective antimicrobial treatments against multidrog resistant infections. To indicate them, bring strict control of potencial interactions and adverse effects, for prevent hepatic and renal disfunction. It should be previos culture (sensitivity test) the indication to prevent antimicrobian resistance. The use of orotracheal tubes and staying longer than 5 days in the service, are risk factors for acquiring a nosocomial infection. Roosevelt Hospital in many cases of bacteria resistant to several antibiotics were reported (unpublished datas). The objective of this studio was to collect information about the use of the carbapenems, because there is no standard protocol for use in the Standards for the prevention and control of infection associated with health care, of nosocomial infection committee, of Roosevelt Hospital. The information generated will be useful in other investigations to determinate, test or verify new methods or already established, for others after diagnosis, may indicate a carbapenem for the antimicrobial treatment to be effective, either for an infection in the community or nosocomial.
