Abstract

From March to June and December 1986, 95 palecypod species were collected on the Atlantic coast of Guatemala. The study area was divided into sampling subareas characterized by substrate type and bathymetric characteristics. Sampling was carried out at a maximum depth of 40 feet to include the main fishing area.

Samples were obtained by trawl dredging, SCUBA diving, and hand collections.

Seventeen of the collected species are of economic interest; only Donax striatus, Donax denticulatus, and Crassostrea rhizophorae are currently used in the region. An identification key was developed for superfamilies, and for each species, data on its geographic distribution within the region, uses, fishing methods, sizes, and general ecology are included.

The genus Noetia (Gray, 1847) is reported for the first time for the Atlantic coast of Central America.
