Elucidation of the antispasmodic active ingredient in the n-hexane extract of pericon (Tagetes lucida cav)

In Guatemala, the "pericón" (T. lucida. Cav.) has been studied with considerable interest, with five studies, including:
1. Confirmation of the antispasmodic action of the infusion was carried out by Marroquín in 1984 (1), and in the n-hexane, benzene, diethyl ether, chloroform, and ethanol extracts, currently under development, by Salguero in 1987 (2).
2. The preliminary phytochemical analysis and elucidation of the first structure were performed by Ortiz in 1977 (3), and the spectrometric analysis by Guzmán in 1987 (4), revealing approximately 12 phytochemical components, but not their relationship to the antispasmodic effect. In the first half of 1987, as part of a personal investigation, Ortiz began analyzing the n-hexane extract, obtaining very encouraging preliminary results and coming very close to elucidating the structure of the active ingredient.
The General Project aims to isolate and elucidate the chemical structures of the compounds responsible for the antispasmodic action of pericon (T. lucida), analyzing the extracts that have thus far (1, 2) yielded positive pharmacological tests as antispasmodics. This study, as part of the general project, will focus solely on the analysis of the n-hexane extract, for which the phytochemical components will be separated by chromatography (column, thin layer, gas, HPLC) and other methods deemed appropriate and effective for this purpose. Each of the fractions obtained will be selected for its antispasmodic action until the compound is separated in pure form. By spectrometric methods (NMR H1 and C13, IR, UV) and chemical tests usual in organic analysis, the chemical structure will be determined.
