In Guatemala, the profession of Pharmacist is historically linked to Medicine. In the PRE-COLUMBIAN ERA, the Chimanes (Mayan Priests) cured with a great variety of plants and animals, which appear in the Popol Vuh, and in the writings of Fuentes and Guzmán, Ximénes and other chroniclers of the time.
At the beginning of the COLONIAL ERA, the first apothecary to arrive in Guatemala from New Spain was: DON JUAN DE LOS RIOS, who was also the first doctor and surgeon. On October 15, 1535, the First Order was made for the supervision of the colonial government in the centers where medicines were sold and prepared. Its purpose was to stop the advance of non-qualified people, that is, the persecution of the empirical. As the years went by, there were a large number of empirical apothecaries in the Kingdom of Goathemala, and pharmacies in the convents, until in 1705 the apothecaries and master apothecaries were protected by the laws of Castile. The apothecaries had to pass an examination and prove their practices, and the public pharmacies were controlled by constant and periodic visits.
