The prevalence of antibodies against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus was determined in 500 graduating university students from different faculties of the University of San Carlos, who attended the health examination in the period from October to November 1993 and from January to March 1994. The samples were obtained voluntarily and confidentially, including students of both sexes between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Only students who did not agree to undergo the test were excluded from the study. For the determination, the first generation ELISA Recombinant HIV-1 method (Abbot) was used. The reactive sera were repeated two more times: once using the ELISA test from the same company and the other using the SEROD1A method. It was found that 6 sera were reactive by the ELISA method. The students who were found to be positive were called back for a new sample to be drawn and the positivity to be confirmed using the Western Blot test. The final results were as follows: 2 sera were positive with this test, 1 was indeterminate, 1 was negative and the last 2 students did not agree to undergo a new sample extraction, so it can be concluded that of the 50 sera analyzed, 2 are positive and have the virus. Both students are male.Downloads
