The Podilymbus gigas is a bird endemic to Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, with a current estimated population of 45 individuals. Several national institutions are working to prevent the extinction of this species by seeking management alternatives that allow its reproduction under controlled conditions. The transfer of P. gigas eggs to P. podiceps nests was carried out to determine whether this is a feasible alternative for relocating a P. gigas population to locations outside Lake Atitlán. Two P. gigas eggs were transferred to a P. podiceps nest in Laguna El Pino. They were incubated by the latter species' pair, and one hatched 6 days after the transfer date. This demonstrates that P. gigas eggs can tolerate some handling without completely losing their viability. The method used in the transfer could be used in the future to relocate a population of P. gigas to a location where its reproduction is encouraged, thereby ensuring the survival of the species.
