The aim of this study was to establish the incidence and frequency of erythrocyte antigens in a representative population of blood donors. For this purpose, 445 donors from the Blood Bank of the General Hospital were typed for the antigens of seven blood systems: ABO, Rhesus, MNSs, Kell, Lewis, Duffy and P.
Blood groups O, A, B and AB were found in 68.8, 19.6, 9.4 and 2.2% respectively. The A subgroup was present in 80.4% of donors positive for the A antigen.
The MNSs, M, N, S and s system antigens were present in 89.9%, 75.5%, 42.7% and 50.1% respectively, with the most frequent phenotypes being M+N+ (65.5%), M+N- (23.8%), S-s+ (31.9%) and S-s- (25%).
The Kell antigen, the lowest in frequency in the study, was present in 3.1% of the donors, while the Cellano antigen, the second most frequent after the D antigen, was found in 97.3% of the donors, with the most frequently found phenotype being k-k+ in 93.7% of the population.
The most frequent phenotype of the Lewis system, Le(a-b+), was present in 66.4% of the donors, with the Leb antigen having a higher frequency than the Lea antigen.
The Fya and P1 antigens of the Duffy and P systems were found in 77.2 and 68.7% respectively.
Knowing the distribution of these antigens in the population, a panel of erythrocytes with known antigens was created with the blood of the donors studied, which was preserved at -20°C by freezing techniques, and can be used in the detection of irregular antibodies in cases of blood incompatibility in polytransfused and multiparous women, as well as in haemolytic disease of the newborn.
