For me, this occasion has a very special
meaning, and it is to address the members of
my beloved Faculty of Chemical Sciences and
Pharmacy again after more than 11 years,
when I left it to improve my academic
preparation. In mid-1983, I went to California
on a scholarship to begin my PhD in
Biochemistry, without imagining that that date
would also be my separation from the teaching
staff of the Faculty.
At that time, I was granted a one-year
leave to pursue these studies. I then requested
an extension of that leave by mail, but without
a reply. Realizing that our postal service is very bad, and in the midst of the work and
worries of the life of a graduate student, I
arrogantly and naively thought that upon my
return I could easily rejoin, especially
considering that I would do so with more the
Teaching Career, excluding recognition of
specialized studies and professional experience,
limiting the career advancement of its teachers
to years of service. Upon my return, five years
ago, the possibility of my re-entering the
teaching service as a pre-literary professor
could have been given. A situation that I did
not accept in principle, since the
aforementioned statutory provision destroys
basic foundations of the search for excellence
and individual improvement. what is in
fulfillment is antagonism to the work and
purpose of university life.
This circumstance in my life made me
look for other professional destinations outside
of this Faculty, which has put me in contact
with new people and environments, allowing
me to continually reflect on what Guatemalan
society requires of university professionals.
