Acute respiratory infections (ARI) in infants are a major cause of mortality and morbidity, and absorb a large amount of health resources. The sequelae of ARI are serious as they can cause chronic obstruction of the airways (1).
There are very few data on the extent of the ARI problem in developing countries. Mata evaluated the incidence of ARI in a rural community (2) and Cruz conducted the cytological investigation of ARI in a marginal urban population of Guatemala City (3).
