In the present work, an attempt was made to determine the presence and percentage of antiknock, specifically Methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE), contained in gasoline used in Guatemala City. MTBE, crude Naphtha and gasoline of different brands were analyzed by means of gas chromatography, specifically using the Perkin Elmer model 8,500 chromatograph and a Supelco Wax 10 capillary “Wide Bore” column, 0.55 mm OD x 30 m long. (from Poli-etHen glycol), to determine if the gasoline used in the City contains MTBE and in what percentage. For this purpose, CRUDE NAFTA and MTBE are injected, to establish under what conditions a better separation of the antiknock peak was achieved. in the chromatogram Once the best separation conditions have been established, mixtures of known concentration of MTBE are injected into NAFTA in order to prepare a calibration curve and with this, establish the MTBE content in the different brands of gasoline, estimating that it stops. “regular” type gasolines are between 11 and 16% vlv, and for “super” type gasolines between 6 and 9% vlv.
