Abstract

The population of the Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve (RBSM) suffers from health and nutrition problems, which can be prevented with local resources. This local knowledge has been lost with the penetration of Western culture and the dissociation of communities with the forest.   This work collected ethnobotanical information from seven communities in the RBSM. Work was carried out in Mal Paso and El Mirador de Zacapa; La Hierbabuena and El Pacaya!, from El Progreso; Chajomhá, Los Angeles and Santiagullá de Panzós, Alta Verapaz.   The purpose of the study is to record, document and prepare an inventory of the medicinal and edible plant genetic resources of the aforementioned communities.   One of the most enriching experiences of carrying out this study was the approach to the communities and their traditional therapeutic and cultural practices, which facilitated the knowledge of the different popular and scientific names of medicinal and edible plants, their uses, preparation and importance. The knowledge   A total of 305 medicinal plants were reported in the study, of which 232 were botanically identified to species, of the rest only the family, genus, or common name is known and 145 plants are edible, of which 119 were botanically identified and Of the rest, only the common name is known.
