The population characteristics and habitat use of the black howler monkey Alouaíta pigra (Cebidae) in an area are described of its distribution range not yet studied. Direct survey methods were used during systematic walks and auditory census to obtain the size and composition of troops, density and biomass. Substrate preferences and species used as food were determined by ad libitum observations during direct counts and by analysis of fecal samples. Mean troop size was 5.62 (std. dev. ± 1.84; n=24). There was a trend towards unimacho.dc troops polygamous structure. The parameters found fall within those reported for the species in other study sites. High values of adult/immature and adult female/immature ratios indicate a reproductively healthy population. The data from the hearing censuses did not result in many triangulations (located troops), so no real data on density or biomass were obtained. Possible causes and ways to improve the method are discussed. The monkeys preferred tall trees (30-40 meters), with diameters of 50 to 100 cm and the middle layer of the crowns. In total, 33 species used as food were found (including trees, vines and epiphytes), of which they ate leaves, fruits and flowers. Most belonged to the Moraceae family. Among the food species there are several with utility for man. The study site seems to be a favorable habitat for Alouatta pigra as it presents food species as important as Ficus and Brosimum and have riparian and seasonally flooded areas.Downloads
