      Abstract

High doses of ethanol have been observed to cause liver damage, leading to increased activity of the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase enzyme in plasma. When a group of rats were subjected to alcohol and their plasma activity was determined, it was found to be elevated, compared to three groups of rats treated with alcohol and glutathione, zinc, and linoleic acid, respectively, in whom this activity was decreased. This suggests a hepatoprotective action of glutathione, zinc, and linoleic acid against the harmful effects of ethanol.
