      Abstract

Currently, the predisposition to acquiring infections caused by opportunistic microorganisms is of great importance. This research demonstrated the relationship between infection caused by the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans and one of the predisposing factors for candidiasis: low serum iron levels. One hundred ninety patients were studied, divided into 127 pregnant women and 63 newborns. The proportion of sick and healthy groups undergoing serum iron analysis for each population was 34:43 and 30:26, respectively. Statistical analysis of the results using the F and t tests demonstrated heterogeneity and differences in serum iron concentrations between the healthy and sick groups, respectively. This confirms the hypothesis and leads to the conclusion that iron can be used to prevent infection by this fungus. The above suggests the use of this element as a treatment for infections caused by C. albicans, since the recovery of a newborn patient was demonstrated, whose only treatment consisted of adequate doses of ferrous sulfate.
