Abstract

The healing effect of a 40% aqueous solution of the sap of Croton draco (dragon's blood) on acute gastric ulcers induced by oral administration of phenylbutazone in 192 albino rats was experimentally analyzed. Once the ulcers were induced, the rats were divided into three similar groups, each receiving: 1. water (placebo), 2. cimetidine (reference drug) and 3. 40% aqueous solution of dragon's blood. After sequentially sacrificing (every 1-2 hours) rats from each group, the mucosa of the stomachs was compared macroscopically and microscopically. Through the Kruskal Wallis test and its multiple comparison method (lower alpha = 0.0003 and higher alpha = 0.3125) and the Freedman method (alpha = 0.05), the healing effect of the solution under study was demonstrated by comparing the ulceration indices and the histological analysis of the stomachs of each group; this effect was faster and more effective than that achieved with the reference drug and this in turn on the placebo treated group. Additionally, the acute toxicity of the solution analyzed was investigated, finding that even at a dose nine times higher than recommended, it lacks toxicity in experimental animals.
