Abstract

It is indisputable that the production of scientific knowledge and its application in technology have contributed to the fight against diseases, the creation of new materials, new satisfactions and, more than any other factor, to the economic growth of developed countries. The new economic framework in which we are immersed in the first years of this 21st century tends to turn research activities into an investment factor rather than a consumption factor; it is no longer a creation of knowledge, but a creation of wealth, inducing a significant ideological-conceptual shift in the work of research. And as the idealism of advancing knowledge diminishes, the pragmatic value of creating wealth increases among scientists, this tends to restrict research autonomy as a consequence of the growing commercialization of knowledge.
